I’m so annoyed with a new streaming service coming out every other month. Pretty soon we’ll have a bunch of different services with just their own new and old “originals”.

Viacom has Nickelodeon and MTV, both of which I like, and they’ve not traditionally played nice with them. Multiple times now they’ve threatened to remove their channels from various cable providers if they don’t “re-negotiate” the amount they’re paying Viacom. And they didn’t keep it behind closed doors, either, they’d flat-out broadcast to viewers that their channels were being removed to put more pressure on the cable company.

Now it seems like they’re trying to strong-arm the viewers directly, by trying to get people to subscribe to this service. Honestly, I miss when cable was predominant. It was nice knowing you were watching the premiere of XYZ at the same time as everyone else. I’m not saying that’s gone now (it’s not), but the reality is that most people you talk to won’t have cable. So the communal aspect, while still there, is crippled.

I’ve had it for years because of Big Brother. I’m excited to finally get access to MTV and Nickelodeon.

Just wait, there’s going to be a time when your internet provider will offer all of these streaming cable channels together for one price.

I don't really look forward to spending hours each month signing up for and cancelling and managing the slew of streaming services I decided I want for that month. It's almost simpler (mentally) to just pay the $100 for 200 channels and not have to screw around with it.

And it's more like $10/mo (maybe less with ads).

By that argument you can also choose to just let them renew monthly and you’d still save tons of money haha. Even if every streaming service is $10 a month, you would need TEN of them to match the price of cable. I can’t even name ten streaming services, let alone have a desire for all of them. There is neither convenience nor economy to cable.

The problem with the a la carte model right now is greed; IMO the services are overpriced. Years back, I envisioned getting an a la carte channel (or "service") for $1 or 2$ a month. But Netflix apparently created the industry template with their $10-$15 a month service, and most other services seemed to follow suit. Even though Apple TV+ is considered a bargain at $5 a month, that just isn't a price I'm willing to pay for content I probably will rarely watch.

make an ad supported “free” version and then I’ll take notice. If I like then content well enough then I might “upgrade” to a fewer/no ad subscription.

It's better than you think.

The people who were screaming for "a la carte" cable channels didn't realize that it was never gonna happen.

The reason you get 200 channels with your cable subscription is because of the way the channels are all bundled together.

If you get 200 channels for $100 a month... you would never be able to select 20 channels for $10 a month. That's just not how it works.

But with streaming... you can select one or more $6/month services and get thousands of hours of programming, on-demand, that you can watch on any device. And you can cancel and reactivate at any time.

Try that with cable channels on a crappy Motorola cable box! :p
Totally agree - I change my streaming subscriptions regularly to whoever has the moives / programmes that I want to watch. Towards the end of Game Of Thrones series and Chernobyl - HBO for two months. Netflix for El Camino. Disney+ for Mandalorian, eight months cheap Showtime/Starz deal to catch up on their better movies and Ray Donovan. Cinemax to revisit seasons 1 - 4 of Strikeback. Apple TV+ for See and Morning Wars. As of today back on Amazon Prime Video for Star Trek: Picard plus season two of Jack Ryan and season one of Treadstone done last month. iTunes for Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Suits and Californication as show quality is so high I watched more than once. I terminated my satellite pay TV service nine years ago when their price went over $100 per month for mostly channels that I never watched so I could have access to the ones that I did. Streaming means us consumers can choose what we are willing to watch and what we refuse to watch with our credit cards.

With all the subscription services, I'm wondering which one will go out of business first ?
I predict CBS will die and be bought by a competitor. Peacock too.

Apple, HBO Max, Disney+ and Hulu will be around 10 years from now and will still be thriving. I predict Netflix to file for bankruptcy within the decade.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney+ and hulu merge.

I would. Disney+ is angling HARD for the family and children audience. Hulu is very very adult-centric. I expect Apple to keep the brands separate. They don't want to remove adult content from Hulu, and they don't want parents to second guess their kids unfettered access to Disney content. Also, Hulu originals should be on the front page, not on a small side tab within the Disney+ app.
