Is it just me or are all of these early upgrade plans horrible, horrible deals?

Why don't people realize they can get 300+ for their one year old smartphone and then use an early upgrade to get the newer ones for 400 or so? 300 is conservative. iPhone 4s are still 350ish online used.

The average customer has no idea what the true value of their phone, iphone or android is. And most ppl i talk to may not feel comfortable selling it on ebay, or craigslist etc. So these retailers offering trade in programs, and low balling the customer towards the price of a new phone are making bank. And the customer is so naive they think they are getting a deal when they trade their phone for a new one. This program will seem like a deal to your average Joe. They wont comprehend they are getting screwed in the process.

finally.

Us phone carriers are becoming less jerks and more oriented on the customer.

THANK YOU MOBILE PHONE GODS

Excitement aside, is it a giant huge discount for customers? No, but for single/dual line people this is some big savings!

I absolutely agree with your second sentence, however, based on the roadmap listed in the picture Verizon has been working on this since before the T-Mobile announcement, so it's not clear what carrier started it first.

Probably a good bet T-mobile didn't just say "Lets change our entire business model next week."

I have a single line plan with Verizon and I fail to see how paying nearly $400 dollars for my iphone that I will have to GIVE BACK TO THEM for the privilege of starting another monthly payment plan to pay another $400 dollars year after year after year is saving me anything! Seriously break out a calculator.

Current plan $300 for iPhone, use it for 2 years (that's $150/year by the way) and then upgrade again to another iPhone that might cost $350 while selling my 2 year old iPhone for $200 bucks or more since it will be "prehistoric" by then making my net out of pocket (assuming this was my first smart phone ever)..... drum roll please $450 for the next 2 freaking years ($225/year).
Net out of pocket of $450 for 4 YEARS of OWNING a phone vs $400 for renting a phone for 1. This is seriously straight up robbery.

Then the phone I paid $150 for next year I use for 2 years and then sell for lets see $250 and buy a new iPhone which no doubt costs $400... making my net out of pocket $650 for 6 freaking years of owning a phone.

On the new plan proposed I would be $400 + $400 + $425 + $425 + $500 + $500...... soooo yeah it would be a $2650 for the privilege of getting the newest phone each year.

Verizon keep your damn new plan it's completely insane that any consumer will benefit.

The only way this is not complete and utter thievery is if they cut the plan costs dramatically so that your plan cost really is your minimum 12 payments of $32.50 and your data charge is 40-50-60 dollars or something. Sure throw in a surcharge or some made up charge for another couple bucks but then you pay $82.50/mo for the mid data range and after 20 payments you then only pay the $50 dollars until you decide it's time to feed the new phone addiction when you will restart the madness.
