Update Applications not working

Hi, for some reason The update functions on my programs aren't working, Although my web browser, mail, and iChat can connect to the internet. Even software update is saying that I'm not connected to the internet. This is coupled with periods of sporadic, internet loss on my web browser, but not in mail or iChat. Can someone please help!?

If possible, re-install OS X but remember to back-up first. That's the easiest way.
