**It's just a crazy deep scratch... took the cover off and no sign of defect! Case closed - well sort of.... "WHO SCRATCHED MY MAC?"

Just noticed this crack on the bottom of my macbook pro 17 late 2011.

Is this normal? I'm new to Mac and always take such good care of it - so this makes me worry that it will keep getting bigger on it's own and the corner end up falling off.

I contacted Apple, they said "accidental damage" (but seriously...) and go to the closest repair place and they'll tell me what it will take to fix it. This seems like this would be a material quality issue with the aluminum.

Anyone else see anything like this? I'm interested in how this is handled, it will help me decide if I want to buy the applecare or not.

Definitely NOT normal. There musth have been a fault in the piece of aluminum that they milled that part out of, resulting in a delayed crack.

Worst case scenario: they make you pay for a new bottom cover: $80 (iirc).

Looks more like a scratch/gouge to me. Apple replaced the bezel around my MB for free because it was cracking all over, even though it was 3.5 years old.

Unless you can prove that it was a manufacturing defect (which I don't know of any way that you could), you'll have to hope for a sympathetic manager who will replace it anyways. If you want to pay to replace it, though, the good news is that it should be fairly cheap, because it's just the bottom plate. The part shouldn't cost much and the labor should be very little.

That's why aluminum bike frames don't last more than 10,000ish miles.

Post that on the commuter forum @ bikeforums and see how long you last :). My Alum frame Cross bike has well over 20K and is still like new.

scratch or crack I cannot tell, but it is not normal. You can probably discern of its a crack by taking the bottom pan off and seeing of you can see it from the inside.

Either way its a bummer :(

Buy bottom plate from Apple - problem solved.

That is not a crack in my book, it looks like it hit the edge of something (a table maybe) and cut into the aluminum. Cracks don't look like that.
