You don't need to wipe and install OS X ever, unless you've knackered it yourself.

Actually I don't believe you can always update from a beta version to the GM/Final. (I stand corrected here)

GM is the same as final version.

GM = Public Release

GM is what they put on new devices before they ship them out to stores.

I am pretty sure I have seen times when Apple SAID that you CAN'T, but in each case you actually could.

The GM release is the same as the public release.

I figured this out when I had the iOS 7 GM on my iPhone and when it was released to the public, my iPhone was "Up to date" :p

Yeah, they say that in the developer docs routinely, but I believe it's just to remind folks that there are no guarantees when it comes to installing and running OS X DP releases. They haven't orphaned any OS X DP releases in the time frame that I've been paying close attention (just the last few years).

Don't put words in my mouth that I did not say :p

What I'm saying, and I'm sure you noticed yourself since you've been here a while; this particular question comme often.

There should be a sticky not just for this, but also for other terms that people with less knowledge could read to prevent the same things from being asked again and again :)
