Normally I update as soon as an update is available, just for the security updates. But you know, this time Apple Intelligence will download all of its cruft and enable by default. I’m hesitating until I find a way to not just shut it off, but empty the trash as well.

Microsoft figured this trick out many years ago. The updates used to be individual patches. Then there were security rollups, and quality rollups. Now it's just a cumulative update.

Really need to fix the latest horrible zero day, but really don't want Copilot? Too bad.

Apple adds more software, and we get notices of 20 more security breaches. Adding more doors to a house creates an automatic security problem. A simple solution is to stop adding to the software so often. The old house of cards analogy.

For iOS there won’t, because all devices that support iOS 17 also support iOS 18. And even for iPadOS, Apple generally doesn’t allow updates to an older version than the respective iPad supports.

Then why did iOS 17.7.2 come out at the same time as 18.1.1?

Because for the first few point releases they do now let you delay upgrading and just install security patches.

But at some point, which they do not announce, those patches cease to exist for any device capable of receiving the latest major release. And if they do keep coming out, if you don't install them as they come out, you miss your chance and can only update to the latest release.

Source: iPad Air I tried desperately to keep on iPadOS 15, the last version before they turned the TV app into an ad platform (primarily for TV+.)

Good question. I’m still on 17.7.1 and can’t update to 17.7.2 anymore, because Apple stopped signing it in December. The release of 17.7.2 might have to do with the fact that MDM allows to delay OS updates up to 90 days. 17.7.2 was released within 90 days of 17.7, which was released on the same day as 18.0.

To all saying that it is a way to get people on a version of iOS with Apple Intelligence automatically turned on, I am pretty sure this is not the case. I just updated my 15 Pro, which had Apple Intelligence off before the update, and still has it off on 18.3. However, I did breifly turn Apple Intelligence on when it first released before turning it back off, so this might be different for those who have never had it on.

I wonder if changing the region to a country that where Apple AI is not available will stop it and then changing back to your own region after.
That is how we used to stop some stuff on Windows.

"One could allow an attacker with physical access to an unlocked device to access the Photos app even when an iPhone is locked"

How does this work?
A lot of these theoretical attacks are so sophisticated and extremely difficult to pull off that they are meaningless in the grand scheme of some thief breaking into your iPhone. This one requires physical access to the device. If your iPhone is lost or stolen chances are it will wind up in a chop shop and taken apart for parts to be sold on the black market.

No way I’m taking my XS off iOS 17
Was just going to ask if the vulnerabilities patched are because of iOS 18 or if they also apply to iOS 17. Does anyone know? Maybe didn't read carefully enough. There is a reference to something exploited before 17.2, but for latest v 17?
