My perfectly fine iMac currently runs on El Capitan - but I'm wondering if (and how) I might upgrade. I'm currently experiencing sound/video lags on QuickTime movies which I can't seem to resolve, and iMovies isn't an option as I can't update that either (currently version 10.1.4). I am a professional musician, so the sound/visual sync is pretty critical. Thanks for any advice!

How much RAM do you have? Also depends on what type of boot drive you have (HD, Fusion or Flash). If HD or Fusion then replace with an SSD. If Flash then it may be full enough to cause issues with the software caches. About 30% free is the rule of thumb but it depends on the size of your Fusion drive obviously.
