I had the problem & fixed it

Let's see if this works for you --

I'm using Windows XP, so this might be a little different on a Mac.

Disconnect the iPhone from the USB cable

Find the file AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi and move it to your desktop (or somewhere...)

Reboot the computer

Press the Power and Home buttons on the iPhone, hold them down for 10 or 20 seconds until the thing reboots. This will get the white Apple logo, and maybe the yellow triangle screen.

Attach the phone to the USB cable. If iTunes doesn't start, start up iTunes. If it doesn't see the phone, hold the two buttons again, with the phone attached to the cable.

iTunes should see the phone and prompt you to update. It took a LONG time, like 10 or 15 minutes. Let us know if that works. Good luck, hang in there, and, hey, you've got a warranty.

Oh, by the way... after the update finally worked, the phone reported that it was unregistered with AT&T. I just kept it connected to USB and iTunes, it re-registered itself... it took a while, just keep the cable connected thoughout the ordeal.

You'll have to restore the phone after you're done. I'm on song 291 of 330.

Mine came back fine. I only have 1000 songs, 1 movie, 14 podcasts and contacts/calendar data. I restored each category separately and didn't have any problems. I hope everyone can get their touch to restore.

First Try, Computer #1: Updates fails, stuck in recovery mode

Second Try, Computer #1: Recovery fails

Third Try, Computer #2: Recovery fails

Fourth Try, Computer #2: Recovery successful

Apparently perseverance is the key to the whole process. This is my third iPod (previously owned a 4GB 1stGen Nano and an 8GB 2ndGen Nano) and never, ever had an experience like this.

But at least it is working now.

I have Windows XP and I've being trying to update all date. The update gets to a certain area and then it gives me a 1602 error.

At some point, the iPod shut off and wouldn't turn back on. With my old iPod I usually leave it connected and restart the computer and that usually works. it was a iPod nano.

With the Touch, I held the Hold button and the Menu Button down @ the same time until I saw the Apple symbol and everything was okay @ that point. But it still won't update.

this EXACT same thing has just happened to me. i used ipodtouchmasters soft 1.1.4 update in installer and it ****ed up from there. i went back to 1.1.1 after without many problems but when i did get back on 1.1.1 that ****ed up as well. i tried resotring repeatedly and got the 1604 or whatever error, i tried restoring to both 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, no luck. I am now trying to get to 1.1.4

So did the people who got bricked Touches Jailbreak their Touches or no? If not, Apple will replace them.

Just to throw in my experiences. I bought a 32G on Tuesday night, forgot was version it was at but it asked me to up to 1.1.4 and it went smooth as silk. No problems at all. I run XP SP2.

Mike

Here's how you fix a 1604
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER!
Easy as that.:D

And NO iPod touch is brickable. period.

Whoever said that the situation requires perseverance was right. I thought was a goned on the 1.1.4 update.

I uninstall/reinstalled everything related to apple and my usb ports. and it didn't work. I was still having problems updating. Now the two charging cords that I was using had some wear and tear on them so I used my brother's cord was brand new. It worked and restored all the way through. I still think it was a chance situation though.

I still have problems connecting to iTunes but not as many as usual.

I have Windows XP SP2 on a IBM Thinkpad R50e
I had a computer previous to this with far better specifications that took anything Apple threw at it, but I'll need @ least a grand in order to build another one. Anyone.........mind is working.

Can't update iPod touch on a PC

Why? Apple Support does not know. They think MAYBE it's due to PC anti-virus software??? They offer no help.
Bought my touch in June. End of June, tried to update it. Failed. Yes, iPod Touch became a BRICK!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally, someone at Customer Service suggesting finding a Mac to RESET the icon. Now I forget what the instructions were. Anyway, it brought iPod back to life but still had to update it. Brought it back to PC and, voila, it worked.

OK, so last weekend, tried to update it to ios 4.2 for the PDF security patch.
Same ol' *****. Rendered iPod unusable. So, I found a Mac and tried it.
Ah yes, well this time, it updated my iPod BUT it synced it to the Mac. Lost all my settings, music, podcasts, photos, etc. Had to start from scratch and update my iPod.

Apple had best find a way for folks to update iPods on PCs........don't ya think most people with iPods have PCs.

Bottom line: Find a Mac, update your iPod and then re-do everything in your iPod to make it YOURs again.

Latest ios version is 4.0.2

There, are you happy. 4.2 was typo.

As was "icon" rather than "ipod" .

Bottom line: Cannot update OR restore my iPod Touch 3g on my PC. It must be done on a Mac.

If anyone out there has had success updating to ios 4 (any flavor of it), I sure would like to know how you did it.

Disable firewall on PC? I tried that. Still didn't work.
What in heck is the problem?

Try unistalling and reinstalling itunes, if that doesn't work, download the 4.0.2 firmware of the internetz and restore it the manual way.

Can't update iPod touch on a PC

Tried all that.........many times. Restarting computer is NOT the answer.
Not on a PC anyway.

3 different Customer Support ADVISORS could not help me get my Touch updated on PC.

As I said earlier, it would only work on a Mac and then you still have to re-enter all your contacts and such ...........

Apple MUST get this update thing worked out!!! I was ready to throw the iPod in the garbage. I don't need anything that badly that takes 4-5 hours to update PLUS borrowing someone else's Mac to do it.

I updated my wifes Touch on her laptop and that's a PC. It has Mcaffee AVG and there were no issues. I have updated previous versions of my Touch on my deksptop PC. I had mcaffee there, but now I am only using the windows defender.

no issues whatsoever and I did not have to disable anything at all. plugged it in and clicked update. very smooth.

same with my ipad. update went fine.
