I had the problem & fixed it
Let's see if this works for you --
I'm using Windows XP, so this might be a little different on a Mac.
Disconnect the iPhone from the USB cable
Find the file AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi and move it to your desktop (or somewhere...)
Reboot the computer
Press the Power and Home buttons on the iPhone, hold them down for 10 or 20 seconds until the thing reboots. This will get the white Apple logo, and maybe the yellow triangle screen.
Attach the phone to the USB cable. If iTunes doesn't start, start up iTunes. If it doesn't see the phone, hold the two buttons again, with the phone attached to the cable.
iTunes should see the phone and prompt you to update. It took a LONG time, like 10 or 15 minutes. Let us know if that works. Good luck, hang in there, and, hey, you've got a warranty.
Oh, by the way... after the update finally worked, the phone reported that it was unregistered with AT&T. I just kept it connected to USB and iTunes, it re-registered itself... it took a while, just keep the cable connected thoughout the ordeal.
You'll have to restore the phone after you're done. I'm on song 291 of 330.
