Update Pro 1.1?

I'm new to Mac Pro's.... I've been using a Mini... before that, PC.

If I buy a Pro 1.1, can the main board be swapped a newer one? The cases all look similar on the outside.... but can a 2009 or 2010 board be put into an older case?

I don't think you can buy the entire guts a Mac Pro, not unless the case they were in literally melted around them and the owner decided to sell them rather then get a new case. Figure the chances of that are pretty slim. You can get a faster processor for MP 1,1 (plenty of threads around here), but not the main board. Frankly, though, coming from a mini, you'll find a base MP 1,1 plenty fast. You'll be better far off spending the 300-500 hundred dollars that you'd spend a processor upgrade on more memory or on an SSD.

You have a better change of buying 2 quad core 3.0 ghz Xeon 5365 for major performance gains. I recently just purchased a mac pro 1,1 with the hd 4870 1gb, 2 250gb and 2 320gb hds, 4gb ram all for 800. I plan on making the upgrade to the dual quad cores to further improve the longevity of this mac let alone the performance.

I agree, the upgrade on the CPU's (Xeon 5365) would be the best option, let alone a SSD drive to further reduce your latency for applications.
