iPhone Update the IOS?

I don't update major releases like 11-->12. Apple executes planned obsolescence on them and I want my devices to last long.

I don't know if they do planned obsolescence but they sure at least fail to optimize updates properly for older devices. I know that at least features and especially the candy look and stuff introduced on iOS 7 and up wasn't helpful.
