Update: Use new iCloud email address as Apple ID

Nearly there!
By using that link (https://supportprofile.apple.com/) I was able to get my primary address changed to me.com
Then I went to appleid.apple.com and was presented with a dialog box asking if I wanted to make my Apple ID the same as my primary me.com address!
"Make your Apple ID and primary email address one and the same.
Your Apple ID will be easier to remember, and your account will be easier to access and manage.
Change your Apple ID and primary email address to:
Submit"

So I have an old email account that is my apple ID (talktalk.net). I want to change this before I buy my iMac to my @me.com address. If I do this do I then have to change the login on my daughters iPod touch and wife's iPad to @me.com as we all share one apple ID (which is how I want to continue). But what I don't want is for my (@me.com) email to go to the other two devices. I use that for my email on my iPhone and was originally set up on mobile me but now migrated to the iCloud.
I still can't get my @me acct to be primary email or Apple ID. I think I'm going to just switch everything to my @me acct and make a new email solely for Apple so I can ditch my old Hotmail... Then I'll have my @me and the new acct on my iPhone and Mac mail... Then hopefully, I can have my Apple ID be my @me acct. :/
I just moved totally to iCloud email! I'd like to delete my Gmail account from my Mac and iPod, but i can't because of this issue. I only want one email! I have all of my messages and contacts stored on iCloud now...
Any update on this issue? I really would love to switch out my personal @gmail account with my @me account so that any and all Apple-related business is done through my @me email.

It still says xxx@hotmail.co.uk as Apple ID. How did you change that? Even if I can change it to xxx@icloud.com would be something.
Have you tried to look at appleid.apple.com?
It says: "You can use your Apple ID or your Alternate Apple ID to access everything you do with Apple."
I've been using my @me.com for more than a week. So when I log in, say to Game Center with my @me.com email, the login account email is no longer showing my gmail email address but my @me.com email address. You should try to log in using your iCloud email address.
