Howdy all,

I have a 2016 MacBook (purchased May, 2016) and have a colleague who recently purchased the exact same model from our local Apple Store (late last week).

The keyboard on the brand new one feels completely different than the one I have. Mine is very "clicky" and loud, the keys move around a bit more in the cavity, i.e. they seem more "loose." On the new one, the keyboard is far more quiet with a much softer feel on the keys.

That said, I'm wondering if:
  1. Apple has revised the keyboard slightly in the later models
  2. The keyboard / keys / butterfly mechanism wears over time and gets "click-ier" / louder
There's nothing wrong with mine, it works fine (aside from the surfaces getting a bit shiny), just immediately noticed the difference in the volume / feel of the newly purchased one which makes me wonder if some revision may have been done, especially since new MBPs appear to be using this new butterfly mechanism as well according to the leaked photos.

Surprising if they replaced the old keyboard with the new and did not mention this at the event.

Would almost guarantee this is just because yours is worn while the other is brand new. I remember the same thing happening back when my mom got her first rMBP (2014). I had a 2012 rMBP, and my keyboard felt entirely different. As time went on, they now feel the same. I think it's just a matter of 'breaking it in', tbh.

It's possible, but very very unlikely they would change anything about the keyboard design in the middle of a product's lifecycle.

I just had my keyboard and screen replaced on early 2015 (original) 1.2 MacBook. The keyboard is totally different! I thought I was going crazy then I used mine beside my colleagues 2015 MacBook and they are different. New one is quieter and seems to have more travel when pressing down on the buttons.

I played with the butterfly v2 keyboard on the new MBP Esc and it is pretty awful. Feels like pounding on a toy, than a $2k computer. If my phone and iPad are the thickness of a credit card, can't my computer be a little fatter?
