Actually the timestamp and the name of my 16.04.2 ISO is the same as the one here

ubuntu-mate-16.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

Looks like they just dropped the .2 name once it became LTS.
can you compare checksums to be sure? I'll install that iso later today.

EDIT: It appears the one you linked is "16.04.0" as the timestamp listed on the site is april 2016. There's a newer one "16.04.1" from July 2016. There is another set of isos "16.04.2" from Feb 2017, but the powerpc version is missing from that set.

So I do not believe your "16.04.2" iso is the same as the one you linked above.

Indeed, I must have assumed it was 16.04.02 since the link was on that page, the iso I downloaded was also called ubuntu-mate-16.04-desktop-powerpc.iso .

I tried to install Ubuntu Mate 16.10 in the meanwhile but can't get it to boot, thinks I'm going to try Debian 8 in VPC 7 , a bit tired of doing the whole Ubuntu Mate installs to no avail.

I was basically installing it for a newer Firefox to try Netflix (via a user agent ).

Well I grabbed the latest "16.04.1" iso on the site and did a fresh install. I only 'apt-get dist-upgrade'ed the system before patching the gpu driver. Backlight control seems to work fine.

One thing, the patches I posted in this thread are old. Go to the bug tracker and grab the attachments off of there. They do the same fundamental steps, but the newer versions on the bug tracker are better put together. I don't think that would cause your issues, but you should be using the newer patches anyway.

Digging up my old thread, but @128keaton which files do I have to modify to stop my fans on my G4 from constantly
revving up ?

I've recently reinstalled Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS and can't recall ever getting the fans to stop blazing at every thing I do.

Do an apt policy, then an apt search for windfarm. I know Debian has this in its repository, but I'm not sure if UM has it or even supports it.

In the off-chance it does not, perhaps lm-sensors and fancontrol would be of potential use? I'm pretty certain those are in the 16.04 repositories.

I'd also try updating the kernel to the newest version, but this of course, would be a lot easier to accomplish in Sid or Fienix than Ubuntu 16.04, which is kept on 4.4.

No windfarm but fancontrol and lm-sensors have been installed, however even sensor-detect seems to be unable to detect
sensors on my PB 12" G4.

Am I missing a loaded kernel module ?
(/etc/modules)

apm_emu
therm_adt746x
pmu_battery
snd-aoa-i2sbus
i2c-dev

Has anybody got the trackpad more fluent under Ubuntu Mate, it works but I have to drag my finger on the touchpad.

Though I got the same screwy fan patterns as you last time I tried 16.04, my PBG4 12" fans are working just as they should (non-erratically) in Debian Sid under 4.19.16. Maybe use Sid instead?

EDIT: When I restarted and booted into Open Firmware, the fan shot way up. Maybe 4.19 is controlling the fan too conservatively? The machine was very hot prior to the restart, but the fan did kick up several times when it got too hot.

I will say that for some machines, OS X is the superior operating system to use. I believe I consider the 12" PB one of these machines, at least until further notice.
[doublepost=1550695779][/doublepost]Try adding "appletouch" to /etc/modules with "sudo nano /etc/modules" and reboot.

While you still can't play feather fingers with the trackpad, this fixed a lot of it for me. I could see myself actually getting things done with this configuration.

@Lastic Try this. Part of the reason the fans go nuts is the cpu is spiking from the crash reporter in ubuntu going bonkers. Disabling it made my g4 quiet again.
sudo /etc/init.d/apport stop (stops this service)
sudo nano /etc/default/apport and change enabled=1 to enabled=0 (this permanently disables it upon reboot)

Cheers

I think this hint will help me a lot since I always get a popup at boot about apport trying to report something.
Will keep an eye on the fans.
