Updated iPhone 3G to iOS 4.0.1 but don't see an option to turn on "Retina Display"

The 3G and 3GS never had screen issues, so when you add the Retina screen, don't forget to add the Apps to go with it. Ya know the yellow circles App for the screen or the green line App. You have to make it just like the iphone4 to make it feel the same.
It's actually quite easy:
Just hold your iPhone 3G at 22" away from your face, and it automatically becomes a "retina" display, since at that distance a normal person can't see the pixels any more... same as the iPhone 4 at 11".
(I think Apple made up the "retina display" definition because "print quality" [300dpi] had already been used by Toshiba for their G900 phone (310ppi) back in 2007.)

All you have to do is open Google maps and type in "Apple Store". Go to the red pin closest to your location, approach a sales associate, hand them your Apple Technology Member card (ATM for short), and for a slight fee, they will upgrade you to a retina display.
