Updates - how can I stop?

I have an app update ready to download which I don't want. How do I remove the number one against the app store icon on my dock please?

Edit: Have decided to update the app and hopefully that will remove the prompt.

Unfortunately to my knowledge there is no easy way to do this.

You can hide some updates by control clicking on them and selecting "hide update" but for some reason it only works on some updates and not all of them.

As for why Apple decided to build this half-assed combination of Software Update and App Store I have no idea, Software Update worked much better previously when was a separate software...
