Does anyone know if that you use a patch to install Sierra on an unsupported mac, if you will get updates from the app store for the OS? It seems that if installed, that the computer and server would recognize that there was a need for the update since OS installed

4,1 flashes to 5,1 works fine. Had an initial hiccup at the login setup. Booted drive externally to MBP. Did the initial setup and works fine inside MP.

my Mac Pro 4,1 was fw upgraded to 5,1.
Installed a Wifi AC + BT 4 card
running CAT enabler
macOS Sierra very happy :)

After the 5,1 firmware hack, the 4,1 will be natively supposed. So, this method is for 4,1 only, for other Mac, you may refer to the following post, which has a step by step guide on how to install Sierra on an unsupported Mac.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-installation-guide-for-sierra.1978005/

Even though the guild is for Mac Pro 3,1. But other Mac should be the same. The 2 big steps are...

1) boot as target disk mode and install Sierra by another supported Mac.

2) Reboot into recovery partition, and use terminal to run "sudo rm /Volumes/[Main Drive Name]/System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist"
