So...I noticed an update to Workoutdoors app had automatically installed to phone earlier, it had some interesting new features, so I opened the app on Watch but couldn’t find any of the new stuff.

I went to the pointless (to me) App Store app on the phone, scrolled to bottom, clicked the button, clicked on Updates, and as always, it just seemed to do nothing at all. I restarted the watch and did this again, no difference, still running the old version on the watch.

Then, I searched for Workoutdoors via the App Store app on the Watch, found it, and it had an UPDATE button, updated and all is well.

BUT...what about any other Watch app updates??? How do I force them to actually happen?? If I go back to the AppStore on watch now, WorkoutDoors now appears as “recently updated”. But I’ve definitely never seen anything else appear there.

I dont want to be going round searching the AppStore on my watch every so often just to find updates...are there certain circumstances that need to be met for updates to arrive??? Ie...would the WorkOutdoors update have appeared overnight or next time I put on charge or something??

(I had automatic updates enabled, but obviously that did NOT work).

Watching this thread as same happened to me today. Deleted the app on my watch and reinstalled to get the new version. Was a mistake as all configuration was deleted.

I have just done some reading and it seems that watchOS 6 requires the watch app to be updated separately to the iPhone app. This is part of the changes that allow apps to run independently on the watch. I don't know if this affects all apps or just those like WorkOutDoors that tell iOS/watchOS that they can run independently without an iPhone app.

Thanks for finding the update button on the watch App Store app. I had hoped that was the case, but I always have the latest version of the app so it is never shown for me.

It is an annoying change. Even if the app can run independently then I would still expect that if the iPhone app is updated then the watch app should be too. The new version of WorkOutDoors has only been out a few hours but I have already had several people asking where the compass settings are because they were still using the old version.

Are you sure this is watchOS 6 change? All my apps seem to have updated without issues on the watch without me having to manually update them.

There’s a switch for automatic updates within the Settings app on your watch.
