Currently using Safari 10.1.2 with Yosemite on a 2008 iMac desktoop (I'll leave that typo). Facebook now says my browser is out of date for them and I'll soon not be able to get FB unless I upgrade my browser. What's the easiest thing for me to do without upsetting stuff? I'm an old guy and not too good with computers.

Update to OS 10.11 El Capitan, which is the maximum official release for your computer. You can download it straight from Apple.

Then instead of Safari, which is out of date on Yosemite and El Capitan, use Firefox which you'll be able to run the latest version of.

What happens to all my Safari bookmarks? Where would they be?

Well, El Capitan doesnt exist as far as the Apple Store is concerned so I went ahead and downloaded Firefox anyway. Seems to be working OK. One little annoyance: I've got the Firefox icon in the dock, and in the Applications folder, but I have the disk image sitting on the desktop and I cant get rid of it.

You can download OS El Capitan from this Apple link - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT206886
See under point 4, where it says:

If you still need OS X El Capitan, use this link: Download OS X El Capitan. A file named InstallMacOSX.dmg will download to your Mac.

Even if you've had Firefox installed successfully, I would nevertheless recommend you install El Capitan. It is a slightly more up-to-date version of the OS, which means you'll be better supported on Firefox, be safer on the internet and encounter fewer compatibility issues.

If you'd like to remove the disk image in the desktop, you can just right click on it and select 'Eject', or alternatively just Command+E on the keyboard while the disk image is selected.
