Well, after reading stories on the new third generation butterfly keyboard, I have decided that I will go for the previous gen Air. Pricing one out with my corporate discount, the 13" Core I-7 with 512GB SSD came up to $1,456.00.

I thought, maybe I can reduce that by trading in my old 11" Air with Core I-7 and 512GB SSD. To my surprise, Apple offered $240. I may have been out of the used market for a while, but that seemed low, even for Apple and considering their mark-up.

Do I need to readjust my expectations if I attempt to sell it myself or is this the going rate?

As far as trade-in values go, that is low. (and understandably so) Jay Brokers is offering $270 for a 2014 11" MBA w/256GB SSD. (for an i7 / 512 you'd need to contact them for a quote).

Generally speaking, you can get more by selling than by trading in. The benefit of trading-in is a hassle-free, instant transaction. For me, my time and peace-of-mind have value to me so I'm fine trading in my hardware even though I know that I could make more by selling. (and because I usually buy my new devices at significant discounts, the gap between what I bought it for and trade it in is approximately the same as what others pay and sell)
