Updating iPhone with no SIM?

I have an old iPhone 2G with no SIM card in it. I tried to update it to 3.0, but iTunes is telling me that I can't activate it without a SIM or a SIM PIN. I wanted to use it as an iPod. Is there any way around this?

I think you have to put it in airplane mode, or you cant get to that screen?

I had it in airplane mode before I tried to update it. I backed it up, and after trying to click update in iTunes is when I got that message. Now I can't do anything with the phone. It pretty much shows the screen that wants me to connect it to iTunes.
