i have an older IPad Mini (A1432 model). I bought it 4 years ago mostly for my son to use on long trip. More recently, he uses it for entertainment, and school work.

I’ve updated it as far as it’ll go and I’ve noticed he’s starting to have problems with certain apps. Some can be resolved by restarting the device, while others he just can’t use, it’ll load and then close before he can do anything.

I’ve decided to look into a new tablet for him. I’d rather stay with Apple as I’ve already invested in apps and media for him. Also, most of my family has iPads so we FaceTime with them. (this is important because we live 3000miles apart)

Question I have, is which iPad is going to give me a better life span for the money invested? Will I get 4 years use out of a mini 4? Should I go with one of the Pros at this point?

Any thoughts or advice is welcomed.

You should get the 5th generation iPad (2017).

The iPad mini 4 has been on the market for more than 2 years, which means its half way through the product lifecycle. It uses a processor introduced in 2014.

Based on your use, you’ll certainly get four years out of the Mini 4.

Depending on your Son’s age (and what kind of schoolwork he’ll be doing over the next four years) the 2017 iPad may be a better investment (if he’s in grade school, the Mini 4 would be okay - 5th grade or above, i’d go 2017). Go for the Pro if you think he’ll use the Apple Pencil (for drawing or taking notes in class).

Thank you all for the thoughts. It’s cleared up a bit for me.

My son is in Grade 2. Fortunately most of the work he does on there is reading based and math. The school has the IOS ecosystem in the classrooms too.
