upgrade 1.1.1 to 2.2 help

hi
i have a 1st Gen. iphone with version 1.1.1. which i jail broke and unlocked at that time. i haven't done anything to it after that. now i want to upgrade to the latest version 2.2.1. is that possible? some people are saying it's not if it's not ...how do i get 2.2 version because when i connect it to itunes to restore it its says 2.2.1
please help. i am a complete newbie. am on mac

There are several active threads with all the information you need now.

What you need to do is:

• Sync (backup) your phone in iTunes
• Restore your phone
• Upgrade to 2.2.1 via iTunes
• Jailbreak using QuickPwn (check the unlock box if you want to unlock your phone)
• Backup your data from iTunes to the phone

but eveeryone is saying not to upgrade to 2.2.1 as it does not unlock

The first gen (2G) iPhone is still unlockable on 2.2.1.

You don't want Yellowsnow, that is for 3G phones. You want QuickPwn to jailbreak and unlock your 2G. Read the guides on this forum area.
