This weekend I have been working to transcode some video from DVD to view on my iPad. The system I initially performed the transcode from was my trusty 3.46GHz, hexacore 5,1 Mac Pro. I performed the same transcode on my 3.5GHz hexacore 6,1 Mac Pro and the transcode time was approximately 25% faster on the 6,1.
I'm toying with the idea of upgrading the 5,1 to dual 3.46GHz 6-core processors and also upgrading the 6,1 to the single 2.7GHz 12 core processor. The 2.7GHz 12 core processor in the 6,1 is clocked roughly 25% lower than the 3.46GHz clock speed of the 5,1. Given then 25% faster performance of the Ivy Bridge processor in the 6,1 I suspect the clock speed difference will be negated by the higher IPC of the 6,1.
The 5,1 has the aforementioned 3.46GHz hexacore processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB spinner, and the 5770 GPU. The 6,1 has the aforementioned 3.5GHz hexacore processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and dual D300 GPUs. Given the primarily CPU bound nature of my work which system would you recommend an upgrade to the CPU?
