I have a late 12 retina a1425 macbook pro. It will not recognize the fanxiang ssd I put in it. I have the appropriate adapter but can't see the ssd using disk utility or diskutil list in the terminal.I have cheched the box for show all devices as well. I have installed Catalina on an external hdd, also monterey using oclp and also high sierra hoping to change the boot rom. The current boot rom is 280. Will I have to use an Apple ssd first? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OCLP will not help you with updating the firmware. Best method is to use the Apple OEM SSD, inserted in the internal slot of the MBPro. Install the latest natively supported macOS, which is Catalina--installing from an external bootable installer. You should then get the latest firmware, which is 429.0.0.0.0 on a MacBookPro10,2
There is nothing you can do, other than try the Catalina installer, installing to the OEM SSD. Nothing later will help you, as that is the highest that will install natively. Don't try anything with OCLP, as that also won't help you with the firmware. If you still don't get the 429 firmware, remake your installer, using a freshly formatted, single volume drive, to make the Catalina installer. Do an SMC reset, then NVRAM reset, then boot to the Catalina installer. Install to the OEM Apple SSD. Again, nothing newer than Catalina can help you with the firmware update, not even with OCLP

Great! Thanks for replying! Looks like I need to get an Apple ssd. Found one on ebay that says Apple ssd and it looks to be one of the original ones so I will try that.

This is what I'm thinking on buying

I went ahead and got it.
Wish it was available when I bought the Fanxiang ssd but it wasn't.
They don't seem to stay available for very long so I went ahead and ordered it.

I got the apple ssd from ebay but I can't seem to get the laptop to recognize it. I did the nvram reset but it didn't help. I tried another ssd caddy but that didn't help either. Any suggestions?

Made an ubuntu 20 installer on a usb and ran gparted. No show on the ssd.

What is the "SSD caddy" that you tried? If you mean an external enclosure, that has the correct card connector for your Apple OEM drive card, did you try connecting the enclosure (with the Apple card installed) to USB port on another computer, just to see if the drive card is recognized through another Mac...

The caddy I tried was an original apple internal ssd caddy. I was thinking maybe mine was bad but another one didn't help. I wish there was an enclosure for the spple ssd with 7 +17 pins but I don't know if one exists.

K sorry I should have checked first. There is one on ebay for 25 bucks. Might have to get one.

Great thanks!
I wonder if I installed catalina on ssd using this adapter if it would then recognize the ssd?

If you install Catalina, with the OEM blade in an external enclosure/adapter-- a successful install should update the firmware, so you would want to check for that update to the current 429.0.0.0.0
And, that firmware update, if that is successful, may also take care of your issue.

Does anyone know if the Sandisk Sd5Sl2 apple ssd is considered oem? It has the right pin configuration, meaning I don't need an adapter, but could it be my macbook doesn't recognize it because it's not a Samsung?

I can't speak to the 2012 MacBook but my late 2013 13" Pro, early 2015 Air 13", and mid-2014 Pro 13" would only accept the High Sierra firmware with an OEM drive inside the laptop.

K thanks!
The drive I have just won't work so I am going to try a Samsung oem drive and see if it shows up.
