    Hi all
New to forum, first post - pls be gentle!
Soon to splash out on new iMac, but want to tinker with Lion Server on my existing Mac Mini when it's available.

However, can't run Lion as it's only a Core Duo 1.66.

Read in a few places on the web that I can upgrade the processor without too much grief to a T7200 or T7600 Core 2 Duo, which would meet the min spec requirements of Lion. Any ideas on whether the Lion installer would recognise the chip upgrade and allow the install?

Already done 2gb RAM and 1 Tb hdd in this machine, so confident with taking it to bits, just don't want to waste money on a chip if it won't give me what I want.

    Really appreciate any advice

    Thanks

The installer checks the boot ROM/SMC version so upgrading the CPU won't help.

    Ok, thanks
Again, forgive my ignorance - checked on support.apple.com and found the latest EFI and SMC versions for my Mac Mini 1,1 Core Duo are the same as a Mac Mini 2,1 which runs a Core 2 Duo.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237

Does that mean it will work anyway?

    Really appreciate your time

    Thanks

    John

Hmm, looks like it doesn't check that then. Thanks for noticing and for the link. I'm doing a review on Lion and my partner has covered this issue so I was just quoting him. I'll let him know it doesn't seem to be the boot ROM or SMC, but most likely the model identifier that will be checked.

There is a small hack to make Lion run on Core Duo Macs though ;) See this thread.
