I've read the X7900 is a safe upgrade for the T7700, having the same L2 cache and bus speed but the Geekbench results show only a modest improvement. The T9900 has a more impressive score with higher bus speed and L2 cache.

I'd appreciate advice on whether the T9900 is suitable.

T9900 won't work. The FSB on that cpu is 1066. Our 7,1 iMacs only support 800. So if you use that cpu the iMac won't boot to the desktop. Go with the T9300 and you can install macOS Sierra.

PS. I know this post is old but maybe if you still have the computer you will find this helpful

Thanks nandor690. I put a X7900 in my mid07 iMac, along with a 10k rpm hard drive a while back. It flies now in comparison to OEM.
Thanks for the tip on the T9300.

I liked the x7900 when I had it. although it runs a little hot. I have found that the T9300 runs much smoother. I posted the geekbench results and my opinions here

scroll down to the "chosen solution" portion. I also posted in there how to manually add night shift
