Thought I'd give iOS6 a go on the iPad 2. I'm plugged into a machine without iTunes. Ipad downloads the whole file, says it's 'preparing update' and then errors out with a download problem. Do you need to run this through iTunes?

No you don't need iTunes, not if your current iOS is iOS 5.0 or higher. Your iPad is failing while trying to install an 'over the air' update. It should work - however if it continues to fail, try updating via iTunes.

On a side note - make sure you have run an iCloud backup as a precaution before proceeding.

Mine did that. Third time was a charm for me.

-although I did it the day it was released at 6pm eastern time when half of the country was also doing it. lol

Sheesh. Went through the whole backup, transfer purchases, download iOS6 and install and it errors out at the end. This is running through iTunes. wft.

I'll try again I 'spose... (*shakes fist) Now, it's going through an hour long recovery install...
