Just put my order in, using Apple iPhone Upgrade Program for the first time and was looking over the order, I see a $30 upgrade fee. Does everyone get charged this or is this through the carrier? This is the first time i used apples upgrade program (I’ve always bought my phones outright or used AT&T’s monthly payment program) and they always waive the fee on our business account. Anyone know if this $30 fee Apple charged me has to do with my carrier? Do they ever waive/refund this? Seems odd Apple is collecting an upgrade fee when they have nothing to do with the upgrade on my carrier...

It’s a carrier upgrade fee. Last year was the first year AT&T charged me the $30 fee when doing the IUP. I was able to get the fee waived. Just call them, be nice, and inquire why you’re being charged an upgrade fee when ordering through Apple and they should just waive it. Worked for me last year and I plan to get it waived again this year.

If the AT&T rep won’t waive your fee, try going to an affiliate store. I’ve had better luck there. They seem willing to credit back the fee, no questions asked.

So call Apple about it or call AT&T about it?

If you think that’s bad, Verizon charges freaking $40. I remember them using the excuse years ago when they added it “oh everyone else does it too, so we added a fee”, and now they increased it?

They waived for me last year but said it was a one time thing.. honestly its just a sad money grab.

Pro tip - They always say it’s a one time thing.

I agree it’s a sad money grab and I’m sure the amount of people who just pay it without asking for a credit is why they waive it for those who ask (in most cases)

Can you avoid the ATT fee by getting the sim free version? Of will they nail you when you move the sim card over?

At least with Verizon , if you buy the "sim free" version without going through a carrier directly from Apple you won't pay an upgrade fee. You just do a SIM swap. At least that's how it has been for me with Verizon the last 3 upgrades.

Wanna know what’s absolutely insane, FIRST NET charges you a $30 “pre order surcharge” and then also charges you $30 for activation... they also add taxes and other surcharges ontop of both
