Upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.9.1

I am trying to upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.9.1. I have a macbook pro 8 1. I downloaded 10.9.1 Maverick from the Apple Store.
When I try to open the upgrade to install on my macbook,, the message says that the system doesn't support the software. Suggestions?

Yes. I have a Macbook Pro 8.1 (approx 2011), 4GB memory, Intel Core i5

Hmm... that's odd. Did you just DL the update from the App Store and launch it from the Applications folder to install, or did you try to make some kind of USB installer or something?

Yeah... you have something wrong there. It should install straight away on your machine. Do you maybe have an anti virus or something running that would stop the install?

No antivirus. Thanks anyway. I'll post if I find out the problem.
