The butterfly keyboard is killing me. I noticed recently the cursor would jump around all over the screen. I scheduled a visit in apple store next week. For fun I appraised my MBP for apple store trade in, the price was a lot better than Best Buy’s. Is it worth it to upgrade to the new M1 MBP? Or should I wait until the 2021 MBP redesign?

But a major redesign of MBP is coming next year. They don’t redesign exterior that often. Maybe I should wait?
Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. Until/unless Apple announces it, this is supposition which may or may not become true. Sure, we know Apple will eventually do a design change - but whether it's 2021 or 2022 or somewhen else is something only they know for sure.

Plus, remember the 2016 redesign gave us the butterfly keyboard and touchbar without a physical ESC key -- problems it took three years for Apple to fully address. And it took weeks/months for the keyboard issue to become truly known for what it was. So my view of any new case design will be laden with skepticism.

Back to your original question...

I bought an M1 MBP and sold my 2018 MBP15. Fantastic upgrade. MUCH better keyboard. Much snappier. Haven't yet heard the M1's fan. Love getting the physical ESC key back. Dropping from four ports to two ports isn't an issue for me. If it is for you, then wait for the four-port MBP's to move to ARM. I don't miss the screen size - I really had used the MBP15 in clamshell with an external most of the time anyway. I'm 100% pleased with making the change.

Edit - MacMeAnOffer.com paid me a bunch more for my 2018 MBP15 than Apple's third party reseller was offering. I'd used MMAO before, and this transaction was just as easy. Good email communication and received a check for exactly what I was offered.

True, but are you sure a redesign is coming? Do you honestly think it will be that drastic? If that’s the case, I’ll sell my current M1 and upgrade.

Food for thought. You'll be going to a 13 inch screen if you upgrade. Four years ago I went from a 15 to a 13. It was fine and I got used to it. But, you will notice the difference and you won't like it if you're used to a 15 inch screen. While the keyboard does suck on your 15 and you will most likely get the flex gate issue at some point, if I were in your place, I'd try to hold out for a 15 inch redesign. The 13 is too small for anything but a portable back up machine to use on the road.

good point, i think i will hold onto my 15" MBP a bit longer until the M1 equipped bigger screen MBP is out. i already have a 11" IPP for my entertainment, web browsing needs, having a 13" MBP will be kind of redundant.
