Hey folks, ive got a late 2015 i7 iMac with a 1TB Stock ssd and 24GB of Ram. Stock it came with 8 and I upgraded when I bought it. Its not a slow machine and its 5 years old now almost but Ive been looking around eyeing up the machines and maybe even the iMac Pros in the refurb section. Problem is what is really worth buying?

New iMacs aren't heavily outpacing my 4Ghz CPU of yesteryear. I mean ya there's like 15-25% in single core (if you go full fat with the i9) and then a decent chunk about 30-45% on the multicore side of things. I really just want things to overall be snappier, like lower latency so I think single core is going to drive most of that along with GPU. GPU is still not bad for daily use. I get some judder with Google Earth (new one in chrome) but im not a heavy gamer, and so Im still happy with it.

The only reason Ive even been looking is that my screen has a pink leading edge at the edge of the screen which is apparently a common issue, and its getting obvious enough that I dont want to use light wallpapers on it. But in order to get me over the hump on an upgrade I want to see some speed, like significant.

So not sure what to buy for the best value. Mac Pro is so sweet but holy **** the price is tag is insane. iMac Pro so slick and probably my go to except with similar configs on storage and ram I can get a loaded iMac for like 40% less. Geez. But then I look at the benchmarks and Im not seeing what Im spending 4 grand for.

So this is more of an enthusiast rant in that I wish there was a computer that I could buy that would actually make my computing experience faster, even iPadPro Like in overall latency and experience.

Please, Tell me what I have to do.

PS.
Ive also looked at OWC and they dont have any drop in upgrades to get me from 1TB to 2TB (apparently some guys have made it work but it involves some command line stuff Im not sure I 100% Trust for my main desktop machine. (I need this thing to be reliable). Ram I can do though maybe a couple of 16GB Chips.

1. What are you using it for and will you be using it for in the future?
2. Do you really need to upgrade?

Other than them screen starting to be an issue, and general reliability of a 5 year Old machine I don’t necc need an upgrade no. I generally would have upgraded in years past by now so its more that I’m not sure what would even be a worthwhile upgrade performance wise for my current machine.

For anyone who has upgraded to a new iMac recently did they notice performance gains in daily usage? Was it worth it?

I hear you with wanting to upgrade re: the display issue. You could check to see how much a new display would be, maybe that could hold you over. On the portable side, after 5 years, there’s finally some improvement in performance, but not as much as you would have hoped. Same with the iMacs from what you’re describing. I’d say just do what you need to keep that one running, as long as it does what you need. You’re not going to be blown away by the performance of a new one, so why not wait to upgrade until they come out with one that does? It’s largely intel’s fault here, but either way seems like putting a few hundred into your machine and saving pennies for when a new more powerful machine is released makes the most sense.

Also curious about this. I have been running a 2015 4ghz iMac with a 1tb ssd also. I love the machine, but it is starting to show its age. I use it mainly for editing photos in Lightroom/Luminar.

My usage doesn't warrant stepping up to a Mac Pro. And the iMac Pro has not been updated in a long time, so i definitely wouldn't buy a new one. Maybe a refurbished iMac Pro is the way to go?

I have no idea if Apple plans on updating the iMac Pro or that was just introduced as one-off stepping stone to the new Mac Pro given the previous Mac Pro had gone so long without an update.
