I currently have the Imac 27 2017 with 3.8 I5 quad core processor & 24 GB of ram. I use my iMac on a daily basis for work which consist of easy tasks such as excel, PP, Word, Teams, Etc. I also have a small Youtube channel & I edit my videos in iMovie for now, but plan to upgrade to Final Cut Pro soon as the channel grows. My iMac 27 works, but seems like has been slowing down a little bit & the video editing works my iMac.. I like the idea of the MacBook Pro 14 with the max M1 chip with 2 external monitors so I can also edit on the fly when needed. I am not sure how much improvement I will se mainly on the editing side. My goal is to cut my time down on video editing & powerful enough to last me at least the next 5 years. If anyone made the change are has input, I would appreciate any info.

Thanks

I got a got a 14 Max (32 cores gpu, 64GB ram, 2TB SSD) yesterday. So far it wipes the floor with my iMac Pro (10 core, 64GB ram, vega 64). I’m astonished at how much better it is, truly. Not done a load of testing but it is like a whole new experience. (The studio is ordered is due tomorrow and is going back, I got fed up waiting and I can’t see how it would be any better for what I need.)

Check the refurb store and you can get tomorrow rather than months from now. That’s what I did.

Thanks for the info & the refurb idea! I also think this may be the best time to sell off my 27". I have 2 1080p monitors now, but will upgrade to 4k down the road. The MPB14 will also act as a third monitor whcih would be a big help.

That 14 Max 32/64/2TB model is also stocked in Apple stores, so you can jump the line if there's one in stock near you. That's what I did when returning a Mac Studio with the whine.

Woah really. I bet I’m not the only person who assumed they only had base models. How come pick up time at store is even later than home delivery then?

It has to be in stock, or you'll see a long timeline like anywhere else. There's usually +1 day for store pickup, presumably to let them unpack and process a shipment.

Looking around me, 10 of 12 stores have the 10c/32gpu/64GB/2TB model in stock in space gray, and it's 11/12 for silver, so they're out there. Also, this is a strange but consistent thing with Apple, but you need to pick the higher end ($2499) model on the web and then customize it to those specs above. Even if you pick the exact same specs, but start from the lower base model, you won't see any stock.

I did what you suggested and there is one in the SE of England to pick up. Otherwise it's June 17. Interesting, thanks! My refurb is playing up just as my Mac Studio turned up as I was on the phone to AppleCare. Never bought a refurb before and after two days I'm very nervous. I might keep the Studio now. Going to set up and test.

*UPDATE: got the MBP working fine, the issues were software related - something was causing kernel panics. In my non-scientific tests, it is surprisingly a bit faster than the Studio (32GB v 64GB) so the Studio is going back. It was Illustrator that convinced me, man I wish Adobe would get their act together and optimise their apps, it's like InDesign and Illustrator are the forgotten children. And the MBP screen and speakers are simply next level.

I’d definitely jump on this one if I was looking now. Was able to score the same spec in 16” with no wait
