If you don’t care about price or performance then wait for the iPhone 14

Anything will be better than the 7 in terms of specs and performance

After the iPhone14 announcement, I will likely upgrade my iPhone7 to an iPhone12mini. The size is my major requirement and the 12mini gives me a larger screen in a slightly smaller phone. Might consider the iPhone13mini but I don’t think the price drop will be sufficient for me. Obviously, my uses don’t require latest/greatest/fastest.

Whatever your budget is. So what is your top budget? Then we can advice what to get. Even with a budget many times for an extra $50-$100 you can jump to another generation.

Don’t get the 12 Mini. I have one, it’s a great phone but the difference between it and the 13 Mini is worth the price gap. You can get a 128gb model, rather than 64gb, with a far better battery and a superior camera with an improved chipset which will provide one year of extra support for a mere $100 extra.

I understand your thinking, just not my situation. My 32GB iPhone7 has over 12GB available most of the time so the 12mini’s 64GB is far more than I need. While I do use the iPhone7 to take pictures and some videos of our dog, I also have a DSLR I use for 99% of photos and videos, and I don’t see that changing. So for me the 12mini with a new battery is likely a better fit and will be a delightful step forward, though I will miss the “Home” button. Clearly with the iPhone7 I already bought into Apple’s “couragous” rubbish as it was the first without the headphone jack. And now no Home button. But I will get a larger screen display in a smaller physical device, so thrilled about that.

Another data point on photos: I have a 2020 12.9” iPadPro with whatever numbers of supposedly awesome cameras on its posterior. Prior to that I had a 1st Gen 12.9” iPadPro with whatever number of supposedly awesome cameras on its backside as well. To date over 7 years I’ve taken exactly zero pictures/videos with any iPad. Don’t see that changing. But I digress.

Lastly, again for me, $100 is not a “mere” amount of money. To me it represents a great bottle of wine, two tickets to a theater production or one ticket to a concert, a week of groceries, a month of dog food and treats, and back when I got my iPhone7 two shares of Tesla stock today worth 8 times that. For me, those are far better ways to use $100 than filling Apple’s coffers further, and with the 12mini I have a device that should be an amazing iPhone7 replacement…for me.
