My friend has an iMac version 2.1 Power PC G4, 700mhz,
40gig hard drive (22gig free),
384 ram (128 + 256),
OS Jaguar 10.2.8.

He would like to upgrade to Tiger. But before he buys the discs I asked him to wait till I got some advice from this forum, so here goes...

Even though he meets the minimum specs for Tiger I'm thinking he would be better off with more ram. The max ram for this m/c is 1gig. Would it really stuff things up if he replaces the 256 stick with a 1gig stick making 1.128ram? If so, would replacing the 256 with a 512 be enough to run Tiger?

Can anyone foresee any problems upgrading from 10.2 to 10.4 (ie. missing out 10.3)?

Cheers!

Extra RAM will definitely help and I'm almost certain the 1GB chip will work and be recognised. As for the install, it's probably better to do either a clean reformat and install, or an Archive & Install. I'd avoid the upgrade install option for now. 🙂

Thanks for that advice.

I've got an external hard drive so I'll back up all his stuff and give him the good news to go ahead and buy the ram and Tiger.

Cheers

Why are you updating to Tiger only now? Make sure that your price is a lot less than Leopards ($129) because Tiger is now outdated software.

I think now is a good time to upgrade to Tiger because it is so cheap as everyone rushes for Leopard.
