    I use PC
I have 3gs running 3.0.1 jailbroken and unlocked.

I want to update to 3.1.2. I have few questions.

    1) If i use custome firmware for 3.1.2 would it still required apple signing. In that case apple is not signing 3.1.2 anymore. please clarify this point.

2)Custom firmware choices activated vs non-activated
what should i use. I am on rogers in canada. If i used non-activated then can i unlock the phone later on with another tool.

    3) many sites provide custom firmware, however how do u trust them. please direct me to a site that is reputable.

    thanks

We are not allowing to link to custom firmware, but you may type iphone os 3.1.2 custom firmware.

If it works leave it alone.
If you dont have your SHSH saved thru cydia you will lose your JB and unlock.

    that means

that even if i use custom firmware 3.1.2 it will still require apple to sign it, which they have stopped after they release 3.1.3.

    am i understanding this correctly.

How do you PM someone through this post, i did not find any links or buttons to do that. please help.

Makes no difference whether you need to upgrade or downgrade. The procedure is the same either way.

    thanks

in that case few questions. want to be sure before i attempt.

    1) Should i be upgrading by downloading custom firmware for 3.1.2

    2) Should i be using non-activated custom firmware since i am with Rogers in Canada. In this case would i be able to unlock the phone to be used with any carrier.

    3) Do custom firware need to get signed by Apple. I heard otherwise.

    please clarify.

    thanks

    1. Yes, use a custom firmware. Best way to preserve your unlock.
    2. Use a non-activated firmware if your phone is on the official carrier it is locked to.
    3. As long as your phone currently has an untethered jailbreak, you can restore to any custom firmware without worrying about signatures. Pwned phones do not even ask for a signature.

no, dont download custom firmwares. make your own. pwnage tool is capable of doing this. available at blog.iphone-dev.org. they have official jailbreaks. along with geohot's blackra1n available at blackra1n.com, which does not create a custom firmware, instead, customizes the firmware already on your phone.

What if he doesnt have a Mac? I think he said he's running a windows based system.
I think I have a site that offers custom build IPSW's. Thats where I downloaded mine for my 3GS.
    OP drop me a PM.

a group of kids got banned from all apple stores because they installed a 3rd party app onto a display iphone. they did it from a mac, and they went out of the store, the manager chased them, called over a security guard, took their pictures and sent them out to every apple store, and now theyre no longer allowed into any apple store. so i suggest not doing it.

    ok

i have backed up my contacts, calender, notes, etc via ssh.

I was just wondering if i should do a backup via itune. If i do this and then do my restore of custom firmware. Can i do a restore from itune backup and will it get me everything back to the way it was before.

by loading custome firmware does it wipe out everythign ( like contacts, email, notes, apps ) from iphone.

If you use iTunes to install a custom_restore IPSW, it will wipe out everything on the phone

You should back up everything to iTunes, then once your jailbreak is done, re-sync everything back to the phone.

You should choose set up as new, not restore to backup for a good clean jailbreak.

You will lose your settings but you can go in and reset everything to your liking.

I call B.S. At the bottom of the article you linked to, it says:

"UPDATE: An Apple spokesperson insists there’s no merit to the teens’ story.

"They were not banned from the Apple store," said spokesman Steve Dowling.

So why were the guys under the impression they were banned?

"I don’t know, you’ll have to ask them," he said."
