Hi, i have an imac mid 2011 with i5 processor. I want to update it to i7 3770s (or 3770 if it is possible). I have searched on this forum but there are those who say it can be done and there are those who say no, so I don't know what to do.
What do you think? Is it possible or not?

People have tried, and so far the consensus of those is that it does not work. If you have any source saying it works, please quote here.
There are a few who tried the Xeon E3 1270, and while it is running, sleep is not working.

If you have not yet an SSD running in your machine, do this first before you upgrade the CPU. I have upgraded from i5 2500 to i7 2600, and while I can notice the improvement in a benchmark, I did not notice much in my daily work (which is only home user type, not any professional work).
The SSD speed can be felt immediately. I also have 12GB RAM, which I use for virtual machines. Check your Activity Monitor to identify the shortages. To check CPU frequency and utilization, you can use the Intel Power Gadget.

It is not a matter of TDP (power) but of microarchitecture (= hardware design). i3/5/7 second gen (2xxx) is Sandy Bridge, i7 3xxx is Ivy Bridge. They are different hardware design. Hence, it does not fit the rest of the hardware that is inside the iMac 2011.

Many have tried, see the many posts before yours with nearly identical conversation. Apparently nobody succeeded.
