I was making the point I don't do anything too extensive with my MBP that I wouldn't be able to do with an iPad (besides papers). I guess I mean upgrading the longevity of my mbp by getting the new 13".

I see.

I really think upgrading your computer isn't necessary at this point. The screen will be nicer, and the SSD will make things feel a lot faster, but that's a lot of money for power that will largely go unused. I guess you'll get better battery life too. It's a crapshoot. I'd definitely rather have an older laptop and an iPad than a cutting edge laptop and no ipad. My iPad sees 90% of my daily (non-office) use.

Do you really want advice, or do you just want people to tell you what you want to hear?

Sounds like you've already made up your mind and you're just wasting everyone's time here.

I always assume everyone is just looking for reassurance on the decision they've already come to in their head. No one wants actual advice to consider when posting in forums.

Though I'm probably just overly cynical.

Even lost some forum posts switching between TWO tabs unbelievably. How anyone uses an iPad as a serious productivity device I really don't know.

I cant believe this sh... is still happening. How many tabs had u opened ?

Buy yourself a nicely equipped iMac and get yourself an iPad Air. That's the perfect setup IMO.

Sitting on a desk is last gen :p

Sofa,tv and apple tv is the way to go :)

If all you're doing on the MBP is writing papers, then your MBP will be good for a long time yet. It's not obsolete until it can't do the things that you want it to do. I usually want a laptop to last 4 to 5 years.

Go for the iPad. You will find new uses for it that weren't in your life before. A new MBP is just a new MBP.

Two tabs. I generally have Safari, Mail, Downcast and Alien Blue running, and maybe one other random app. If I used a few apps other than Safari for a bit, then return to Safari, some of the time it couldn't even hold one tab in memory. Even my iPad 3 was better than that.

Fairly easily rectified by using one of those ghastly "free memory" apps - run that, and then Safari can hold about 6 tabs - but I don't want to have to "work" for basic functionality.

Like I say, I'm getting a rMini, it'll act the same, but I can live with it on that as it's more of a mobile companion like a phone. For something that I want to use extensively at home though, forget it, it's not good enough and actually a step back from my old iPad 3. A pity, cos in all other regards the iPad Air is a spectacular device.

What do you guys think? I'm starting to lean toward an iPad.

I have a 2010 mbp and it's also chugging along fine. The 13" rmbp is probably not as much faster as you would hope. You 15" mbp has dedicated graphics that the 13" rmpb doesn't. The iPad will change your browsing habits considerably. Much more portable and very long battery life. You'd probably find yourself using the laptop less and less and hardly at all for web browsing.

Go with the iPad this upgrade cycle. IMO

I'm leaning toward upgrading both iPad and Air next year. The iPad will have 2GB RAM, and the new rumored 12" super-slim Air with IGZO screen will be out. So next year, I think you get more bang for your buck.

Also, the 2013 Air/MBPs are having 802.11ac and Maverick/blank-screen issues that I don't want to deal with.

In the meantime, I'm using a 2010 13 Air, and a iPad2.

So you think I should just stand pat? I was going to get the iPhone 6 next year. I sold my iPad Mini to upgrade and now I kind of want the air but here the 1 GB RAM is being problematic.

Isn't it important to upgrade my MBP to an rMBP before it gets too outdated?
Apple's Macs don't get outdated that fast, you just put Mavericks on it, so it's already improved, is it not? (I know my mid-2010 MBP 13" is improved). In fact, the updates done to MacBooks are not all that significant compared to the mobile devices, as that technology has been more in a development stage. That iPhone 5 is a fine smart phone, but, you will find you have separate uses for iPhone/iPad/Mac...I might use email more on my iPad than my Mac now.

Get the iPad Air now, wait to turn in your Mac, you have a fine machine there that'll last a few more years, go to OWC (Other World Computing) and swap out your optical drive for an SSD if you want to make your Mac faster and add more storage.

Once you have the iPad Air in your hands, you will not regret it.

Depends really on your needs/usage. Me too had to make the choice. I got the Air and just upgraded my mbp early-2011 to 16GB ram, my mbp will hold for another year or 2.

I currently have a 15 in mid-2010 MBP. 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5. 500 GB SATA Disk. 8 GB ram. Antiglare screen. Runs perfectly with Mavericks installed. It's in very good shape. Gazelle is offering me $430. Would it be worth it to take this offer and upgrade to a new 13 in rMBP with these specs:

2.4GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

Is this upgrade worth it? Could I get more for my MBP?

I'm contemplating between doing this or sticking with my current MBP and getting an iPad Air (or rMini). I can only afford to do one or the other. Is it more important I upgrade my MBP?

If battery life of the MBP is of utmost importance to you then you should upgrade to a Haswell based system. If you mainly use the MBP on the power-supply or only short while on battery, then save the MBP upgrade and go for the iPad upgrade instead.

Best solution by far:

- Upgrade the MBP with an SSD
- Keep your MBP till it breaks
- Go for the iPad Air

:apple:

Ill second this motion. The air is quite a capable device and I find myself using for things that were only supposed to be desktop or laptop activities. Not saying if can replace a full blown laptop but it can do more than you'd expect.
