Upgrade memory. Is it ok to just buy extra 8gb

I have a 2.7 Imac mid 2011

Has 4gb installed with 2 slots filled out of the 4

Can i buy a 8gb kit (2*4) and therefore have 4gb sticks in 2 slots and 2gb in the other 2 slots?

Or do they all have to be the same?
