I have and enjoy my 2018 iPad Pro. It's fast and great enough for me and does everything I want.

I do want to use window mode though and it requires the M1.

I could just buy one now, but I'm not sure if it'd be smarter to wait for the M2 at this point, provided that it's just a few months away and not next year.

What is everyone else doing who's in the same boat?

Personally I think it would be best to wait, Pro M2's would almost certainly be announced around September/October if you can hold out that long. It also depends on budget, there are quite a few M1 iPad offers going around and probably even more over the next few months. Given the new models will probably get a price bump it may be a good idea to get an M1 deal if M1 is all your after.

I guess it depends on your budget and how badly you want to use this feature. Only you know that. I’m not upgrading my iPad Air and if the M2 is compelling I might but it does what I want. That feature is it really that important for me but maybe it’s just what I use it for

I haven’t seen any good deals recently (just $50 off on my desired config) so I’m on the waiting camp for now.

If you’re buying specifically for Stage Manager, I’d say just wait. iPadOS 16 won’t be released until likely September anyway and by then, it’ll probably be much closer to M2 iPad Pro release. Even if not, we’ll probably still get better holiday deals on M1 iPad Pros.

I had the same dilemma as you (although I upgraded from a 2015 IPad Pro), but after WWDC I decided to go with the M1 iPad Pro. Reasoning behind this was, that the M2 iPad most likely would be rising in price, the current M1 wouldn't fall in price and there was no feature rumored, which I would really need/want.

I will wait, as the current M1 iPad Pro / Air don't seem like a compelling upgrade from my current 2011 11" iPad Pro (I am basically getting a faster processor and little else; everything else is practically a downgrade relative to the Air). I am also not entirely sold on stage manager.

I am also giving up on the smart keyboard (since my current one has stopped working altogether), but I don't know what else to use as an alternative.

If the current iPad Pro still serves you well I would wait as well. Update cycle suggests 18 months so that would be October / November 2022

There might be a price increase due to inflation but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen (in USD at least - in other currencies apple seems to adjust more frequently). Trend seems to be that apple is increasing price with redesign or added features (xdr display, redesign on macbook Air / iMac last year)

As others have mentioned, stage manager isn’t going live to the public until after the summer so for that feature you don’t need to buy right now.

I’m in the same boat, been happily using a 2018 12.9” since launch. Still such a beautiful device, but was planning on upgrading this year (prior to knowing about Stage Manager and such).

Sounds like sept/oct announcement for the 2022 M2 update. Tempting to try out stage manager now - but I think its best to wait before upgrading.

Will probably have to wait a while after M2 iPad are announced with so called chip shortages.

Also.. it will make no noticeable difference from M1 to M2 on an iPad… Just go for it and enjoy it. There will always be a “better” iPad down the line.

I expect future iPads will go up in price due to “cost of living” going up as well.

I’m on a 2018 11” too. As much as I’d like to use the new iOS things coming this fall, I will not upgrade my iPad until better screen tech is on the 11” too. The 12,9 is too large for my use case, specifically it won’t fit my motorcycle tank bag.

So I’m holding on to my iPad Pro 2018. I’ve no complaints at all really, it’s a great performer still. The most future proof iPad ever released! 😊

But I want mini-led or oled for the inky blacks, contrast etc. It’s darn purdy on my 14” MBP and my iPhone. My iPad used to be the best portable screen I had, now it’s the worst. 😂

Honestly wait. Right now the only feature you would get is Stage Manger. The new models are right around the corner. I love my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. Its still super fast for all of my needs. Maybe when M3 or M4 come out I might want to upgrade depending on the state of iPad OSX. The current iPad operation system is in flux and Apple likes to milk it, that's why I have no real interest in the M2. We would need drastic general changes that would occur naturally by the time the M3/M4 come out. The patents for hybrid tablet/OSX are something I expect with the M3/M4 and the bigger size 14 inch iPad Pro rumored to be in development.

Or if I find an amazing just buy it deal lol.

In a word, wait!

Assuming you aren't going to install an OS16 beta, you wont get stage manager until September, right around when the new phones and probably iPads will be released so you might as well wait.

Instead of replacing my 2020 16’ intel MBP, I just ordered an M1 iPad Pro 11 with Logi combo case. It will replace my 2017 10.5 iPad Pro. The ipad needs a new battery but trade in is awesome at £140.

This makes it a no brainier for upgrading to an M1 powered iPad with a keyboard/track pad case with external monitor support.

I would wait until at least the fall when iPadOS 16 comes out in public release.
