iPhone 15 Pro Upgrade OS on old phone prior to migrating to new phone?

Do you upgrade your old phone to the latest iOS version, in this case iOS 17, before you move to your new phone? I have in the past but also don't like having to do an upgrade on the new prior to being able to do the migration. So I'm debating this year to leave it on iOS 16, migrate data and then let the new phone do any day 1 updates needed.

So looking to see what other do. Do you upgrade first or wait?

Always have upgraded first and always make a backup before I upgrade.

The only time it ever got me into trouble when when I upgraded old phone to newest version, made a backup, and then a few days later couldn't update new iPhone to newest because the servers were slammed on launch day. New phone wouldn't accept backup from old phone because old phone was running the newer version. I couldn't use the new phone until that got sorted. Now that I use that migration assistant instead of a backup I think that's not an issue any more.
