I got the 3G last year the day it came out. I found from AT&T if I wait until July 12, 2009, I can get it at the same price as someone new ($299 for 3GS 32 gig), not the early upgrade price today of $499. I am hopeful, though, they'll waive early so I can get it at the $299 price today.

When did you get your 3G iPhone? I got mine day 1 but it says I have to wait until March 2010.

The discrepancy is most likely due to how much you pay each month. The higher your bill (i.e. the more AT&T is making off of you), the earlier you are allowed to upgrade.

Got mine the first day the 3G came out last year. My bill is too high, so it must make me eligible!

Not sure if this works for everybody, but it worked for me. Anyway, my upgrade was suppose to be in Dec 09. Last month I changed my plan from 450 min to 900 min (produced a higher bill) and now my upgrade is 17 July 09. I got my iPhone 3G a week after it launched.

Someone give it try. Bump up their minutes in plan and see if the upgrade date moves from March 2010 to July 2009.

Makes a lot of sense, I think at&t stock went up with my bill 😀
I don't mind it, I am VERY happy!! I had phones with internet before but I never used it like this before.
