I just bought a used Sapphire Radeon RX 580 for my cMP as well I havea NVMe drive in a PCIe adapter. I am going to put the GPU in slot one, would it make sense to put the NVMe in slot 2 if it will fit, or should it go in 3 or 4? Right now I have a traditional SSD on a PCIe card I that I am booting off of, eventually I want to boot off the NVMe.

Unless you are using a switched PCIe adapter for multiple M.2s, don't matter the slot you are using since all M.2 devices are x4 or less.

No, it was not.

Keep in mind, the RX 580 is a dual slot card. It also will require an additional power source, unlike the RX 560.
Thank you, yes I am aware of the power requirements and the size of the card.

It's this adapter

it's a x4 adapter made to be installed with x4/x8/x16 slots. You can see that the data lines go only for the x4 slot.

All M.2 devices are x4 or less.

So did I screw up? I bought a Sapphire Nitro+ 580, and just reread a thread where tsialex recommended against buying this card? Will a dual pin to sing 8pin adapter not be enough to power this card?

I thin I misread your post, can I not power the card from the dual 6 pin connectors in the system with a dual 6 pin to single 8 pin adapter?

It's a really bad choice for a MP5,1. It's a 2.3 slots wide card and when running Furmark or something really stressful, this card can use up to 262,5W (175W x 1,5 PowerTune), with typical load use around 237W. So, it's a card that usually triggers the backplane overcurrent limit when in load.

Some people here got it working, you don't run Furmark all the time, but if you ask, a lot of people will tell you to don't use this card.

No.

All I plan on doing with the system other then day to day tasks is running FCP.

Would this be a better choice then?

I wouldn't use it at all, it's a PC overclockers card. Like I said, some people got it working, others don't.

It's the card that Apple recommends, even so it's a 2.2 slots wide card and will block slot-2 for a lot of cards. No modern GPU is perfect, all have flaws when you think of a MP5,1.

There are workstation GPUs with performance similar of a RX-580 and will fit perfectly size and power wise - like the WX5100, but it's a card that costs more than the double of a RX 580.

OK I think I will return this and get a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580, I think this is an officially recommended card by Apple.

the sapphire pulse RX580 8GB works well in a real 5,1 and you can use
slot2 if you put a little spacer between the two cards.

this does not work well in a 4,1 !

see the difference of booth enclosures:

4.1.jpg

but I don't know where the difference comes from

it's the same card i testet
