Just tried to upgrade to Big Sur

looks like there may have been a snag. Updates was doing it’s thing, then after around 4 or so reboots the status bar finally stopped. For last 10-15mins I’m stuck on the black screen with the apple logo screen and progress bar. Mac fan isn’t running so I’m thinking something is going on.

im considering rebooting but not sure how much longer I should wait. Progress bar has not moved.

Same thing happened to me on two separate tries on a late 2016 15" MacBook Pro. Had to force reboot into recovery mode and re-install Catalina...

Update: after waiting it seems the mouse cursor is now showing, which was not before. Maybe it’s doing something? Progress bar is still at same place.

I've got the same issue. I've been waiting for about 30 mins now, but nothing has changed so far...

UPDATE!! - so after an hour, I decided to power it down by holding down power button. Booted back up and took me to login screen.

Same problem here, my Macbook Air 2013 has been stuck for several hours at 1/3:rd of the progress bar. Gonna leave it running (and I will not attempt to upgrade my Macbook Pro 2013 for a while).

This happened to me too. Seeing the above I went ahead and powered down and restarted. When it came back up it went back to the screen with the unfinished bar for like 20-30 seconds, then booted into the login screen. Looks like I'm back in business.

You can force the power off and hold your option/alt key while turn on your mac again release this key when the apple logo shows up or when hear the bong sound. then, you will see at least 2 options to select: macOS Installer and Macintosh HD - Data (or whatever be the name of your hard disk drive/solid state drive). This last option allow you to recover your previous session of your macOS without reinstall the whole operative system. For avoid this issue in the near future you must to erase the partition called “Update” from the container in the /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
