Will there be a disk to upgrade from Tiger to 10.5.3 or should I just get the 10.5.1 disk and then go through the on-line updates? I think I'd rather wait a little while if such a disk is on its way.

Thanks very much.

Apple doesn't release updated OS DVD disks for every update(but they do roll them into OS DVDs after a few updates). Only they know if there will be a "slipstreamed" 10.5.3 DVD.

Like you said, you can wait, or go with 10.5.0 and then upgrade with the full combo-updater to 10.5.3 (download from the Apple site and don't use the AppleMenu software updater for this - there appears to be a bug in the updater in 10.5.0).

[Make a bootable backup of your Tiger disk first.]

I agree. Just get the 10.5.1 disc installed and then download the combo updater (530.8 mb for 10.5.3) and after that's done use software update to do all your other non-system stuff.

The available disk seems to be 10.5.1, not 10.5.0. Does this mean I can get the 10.5.1 disk and then use the Apple Menu software update? There was a reference to a bug with this in 10.5.0; did this bug carry over to 10.5.1?

Thanks very much again for all the help.

Some people still seem to have trouble with the Software Update (from Apple Menu) missing something, so I'd suggest the combo updater rather than using the Software Update feature. Note also the combo updater is for all previous systems (so you'll be up to 10.5.3 from any previous 10.5.x version).
