Hi All,

my daughter needs a new computer as she works through her course work and I was thinking of giving her my MacBook Early 2015 1.2 GHz 8 GB of ram. She uses word the most so I know this will be powerful enough.

I use the MacBook with lightroom and it is a little slow to respond sometimes but still usable. If I buy myself the 2017 model 1.3Ghz 8gb will I see a better / noticeable quicker / less laggy performance with lightroom and photoshop?

thanks

Josh

Personally I think if your going to be using professional applications such as photoshop the MacBook Pro would be a better choice, these MacBooks aren’t really meant for those type of things, from what I can gather the 12” MacBook is more for people who just want to browse the web, write word documents and so on.

I have looked at getting th 12” MacBook myself but as a writer and editor (editing is more of a hobby and for YouTube) it wouldn’t be powerful enough to run Final Cut Pro which is why I’m leaning more towards the 13” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

Hi

Thanks but size and weight are important components. My 2015 wasn’t unusable for lightroom and photoshop but if the 2017 is noticbly better then it makes sense to upgrade and solve the opportunity for my daughters course work as well.

I disagree, I have the i5 and it's PERFECT for Photoshop and editing. I use FCPX every day to edit 1080p 60fps video and 4K at times and its fantastic. Don't under estimate this fine beauty!!! It's my favourite Mac ever - none of the other MacBook Pro's appeal to me - they're just laptops but the design of the 12' is special. It's different!

I don't know what's changed BUT I remember before I went to university, I was a graphic designer. WE all used iMacs with 64MB of RAM (HAHAHA) and they definitely did not have the power of what MacBooks have of today and yet we thought these 1999 iMacs were insane. So what has changed today? We were using Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator on an industrial scale.

It's great if you can do that on the 12" MacBook but surely you cant edit 4K footage smoothly as well as rendering fast, i don't know because i don't own the 12" MacBook, but it seems odd that the 12" MacBook is positioned more for everyday use while the MacBook Pro's with Touch Bar are aimed at the more professional users (including editors). I will have to check out the 12" MacBook again when i go to the Apple store tomorrow. What configuration do you have? i know there is an M core, i5 and i7 which can be maxed out at 16GB Ram.

Interesting! I cannot make up my mind between the macbook pro and macbook 12 inch. I am a small youtuber who only uses his iPhone X for making videos in 1080p. Every video i produce is without effects, without colorgrading, just some cuts, between 10 a 20 minutes per video. I edit in final cut pro x.

Is this small beauty fast enough to produce videos without any hiccup? And what about the render time? Lets say a video of 10 minutes (wit some cuts) what would the render time be on the 2017 macbook?

I REALLY like this small form factor. I have a physical disability and because of that i only weigh 35 kg so carrying around more weight then necessary is something i have to be really mindful of.

Thank you for reading and maybe replying to my question :)

Cheers,

Hi. I had the 2015 m3 and now have the 2017 m7. I use Lightroom often and its noticeably faster than the 2015 version. The only times the macbook seems to be slow are during import/export. This will be noticeably slower than a macbook pro - but for editing itself in develop module, it is perfectly fine and on par with the faster machine. I use for work all the time as I love the form factor and portability. I also have a macbook pro 15 inch but find myself always gravitating towards the little macbook. Can't wait to see the improvements in the next generations. Oh I forgot to add. I have the 16GB ram version.
