upgrade to os4 and jailbreak question

I have a 3GS on 3.1.3 that I have jailbreaked with spirit.

Everything is great, I don't need a carrier unlock.

I was thinking of upgrading to os4 when it comes out and would like to rebreak the phone.

My question is - will I have to reinstall all the apps I put on it from Cydia and Rock and set everything up the way it is now, or will they still be on the phone and be available/reactivated once I re-jailbreak?

I'm new to the iphone scene, I was a very happy WinMo user for many years and changed to iphone because it was more fluid and didn't crash like my WinMo phone, so far I haven't looked back.

Thanks in advance for your replies/help

Ouch I'll hold out till that's resolved lol

The safari crash has been fixed.... MuscleNerd emailed me last night saying they silently updated this..

"Actually we (silently) fixed that problem the next day, so just download the most recent redsn0w beta. (You can re-run it again without problem, just don't bother reinstalling Cydia again)."

Rock will remember what you've purchased and give you the option to re-download it all again once you have signed in - this was always the case on 3 but not tried on 4 as yet so not sure, however there aren't that many Rock lovers - most people prefer Cydia.. Personally never had any problems with Rock...

Cydia - depends on the dev, as most apps will need to be upgraded for 4 and its theoretically up to them whether they charge or not.. But if they don't charge for the upgrade then again they should remember you've already purchased but you won't be prompted to like Rock does, you'll have to search for them manually and re-download unless you use an app call Package Backup...

Either way, if you have made changes then you will have to re-apply them.

With regard to the upgrade process to 4, I recommend a clean restore rather than an upgrade - not sure if its likely to happen again but when 3 came out a lot of people had issues upgrading to 3 from 2 (battery drain etc)..

Hope that helps..

It's also not publicly available, and as an end-user he is neither entitled to nor should be able to get it. It requires iTunes 9.2, which is also not available.

Actually iTunes 9.2 is available.... I have it and I also am running 4.0 GM and I am not a dev :D

It is now possible to upgrade a pwned phone and keep your jailbreak. msft (the guy responsible for blacksn0w RC2) released a new bundle for PwnageTool that makes it possible to create a custom 4.0 GM ipsw. I'm running 4.0 jailbroken on my 3GS right now.

Be aware that most of the most popular jailbreak apps still do not work on 4.0.

This forum exists for the purpose of hacking, not illegally obtaining software.

I know the guy is now down as "banned", but that line right there should be listed in the dictionary next to "Irony".

Hacking a device is considered "illegal" by device manufacturers.

That line made me chuckle, sorry.

can anyone confirm the redsnow beta works on the new 3gs bootrom? I want to do this but ill wait if neither redsnow or spirit are compatible with the new bootrom. probably going to have to wait for all the jailbreak devs to update their apps anyway (bite, iblacklist)

does he have one for the 3G or just the 3GS, those are the only bundles i've seen. Funny all I can find is for the 3GS, used to be it was the bastard child of JB.

What is considered illegal by device manufacturers and what actually is illegal are often two different things.

Exactly. When you activate the iPhone, you agree to their Terms of Service. These terms effectively say that you cannot jailbreak. If you jailbreak, you are breaking your contract. You are not breaking the law. Jailbreaking is not illegal and you cannot go to jail for do so. If you jailbreak and then obtain software for free - that is supposed to be paid software, then you are committing theft. That is illegal.

If Apple wanted to push the issue, they'd have to file a law suit against a jailbreaker for violation of contract. They'd have to show damages. A smart lawyer could find something to claim damages, but from a practical standpoint, jailbreaking in and of itself does not cost Apple anything.

That certainly does help. many thanks for your comprehensive reply.

If you jailbreak, you are breaking your contract. You are not breaking the law. Jailbreaking is not illegal and you cannot go to jail for do so.

To be fair, there is some argument to be made that jailbreaking requires circumventing encryption that, in the US at least, is protected by the DMCA when not done solely for the purpose of unlocking. Still, companies love to make wild claims that things are illegal when they clearly aren't.
