if your old computer has survived this many updates and still works fine for you so will the new machine, sure the IB will come out but its not going to be that big of an upgrade. After Apple has released such an improvements over the MBP line its going to be at least a year before we see another leap of technology improvements. sure well see a few here and there, but nothing worth waiting for. id upgrade now, it'll last you 100% another 3 years, and probably 5 if you don't plan on playing 3d or doing anything extremely intense.
 
Since you plan on upgrading to a new mbp as well as a SSD you might as well start with the least expensive upgrade and go from there. If you feel you are satisfied with the speed increase of upgrading to an SSD than great, if not, you can start thinking about upgrading the whole laptop. You can also transfer the SSD drive over to your new mbp as well :)

I'd thought of that, but with my education discount the apple SSDs are actually cheaper/Gb than any of the third party ones.
