Upgraded iPhoto lost old photos

Installed the iLife package to my 2 year old G5. Now 80% of my old photos are grayed out. Any way to get them back and why is the beachball spinning all the time. This version was supposed to be fast not like the pig it replaced. Any help appreciated
 
Well, how did you upgrade? What version were you using and what version are you now using? 🙂
 
Upgraded from ver 5 to 6. Installed and imported from the disk. When that didn't work held down Opt + Apple button while clicking on iPhoto icon. Then chose to rebuild all. Of the 1600 photos in my liabrary can only view 200. The rest are grayed-out and of course the ever present spinning beachball
