I got this message:
Great news! We’ve automatically upgraded your 50 GB iCloud storage plan to iCloud+ at no additional charge, and you can now share your subscription with your family. iCloud+ combines everything you already love about iCloud with new features including iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, and more HomeKit Secure Video support.

I pay for 50 gigs and it uploads into the supposed cloud. How is this different from what I pay for? I would rather it just be bigger as this doesn't seem like a big deal.

I’m reading the terms & conditions language. I’ve never read it before but there is a lot in there that looks like it is there to protect Apple from CSAM issue.

There's always been sections in the legal terms/conditions of iCloud about illegal activity(they list examples of what is considered illegal) and compliance with warrants if approached by law enforcement. I read the document tonight and CSAM is not mentioned by name nor could I find anything about scanning on device for child pornography. I did see mention of new iOS15 features like private relay and mail privacy protection along with others..

All the links in the email end up at apple.com/icloud. On that page, there's a header "iCloud Backup and Restore," with the tagline "All the things that matter. Safe and secure." That seems like a distortion of the truth at best. I would only consider cloud data to be remotely secure if it is encrypted with keys that only I possess, prior to upload. (End-to-end encryption, or E2EE.) Apple themselves must think this, because it's an advertising point lower down the same page, for HomeKit Secure Video.

Apple talks a lot about data privacy and security, but they seem wildly inconsistent about it.

It is safe and secure for the mass market.

Most consumers would lose their data if they had to manage keys on their own.

Those two highlights for a start. And they aren't just there for sh#ts and giggles. Those two things are pretty useful.

It is quite a big deal in reality and helps to keep you more secure on the net.

I'm surprised Apple added those two features for free and you can get them for a buck a month. That's worth it IMO. Plus you get some storage!

I don't see how this is a bad thing. Apple have given you something for free that is very useful. Check em out. If you don't like em, you don't need to use them. But they are useful.

So the email says you can share your storage with up to 5 family members but under settings-Apple ID-Family Sharing-iCloud+ it says: UP TO SIX FAMILY MEMBERS

Shared with and shared by are different. Shared with five people means it's shared by six people.

Interestingly, iCloud has suddenly found a lot of Photo albums that it lost about 3 months ago, but now my iMac Photos has now stopped talking to iCloud. Very coincidental that it happens the same time as the switch to iCloud+, almost as if there's been a "reboot" of some part of my iCloud account somewhere.

i got this message, too. We’ve been paying for the 200GB plan for a while but we now have 400GB of storage. I just downgraded to 50GB. 400 is overkill. We’re using about 100.
