upgrading advice?

No one seem to be able to have an answer for my mysterious problem.
(I can tell you if you're interested)
So I may have to uprade from 10.3.9 to tiger and hope that will fix it.

Any advice you may have concerning upgrading? I already backed up my important files. Which mode should I use in order to retain most of my configurations?

Glad you asked but I hope you have a minute to read all this:

Last week , I connected 2 macs to my cable modem with a new router.
The router configuration worked, assigned new IP and both mac were able to connect online. After that , I was poking around trying to establish a small file network between the 2 machines (first time doing it) and I think I made an idiotic mistake when I changed the permissions on my hard drive. (get info->details->owner) I changed the selection from system to my username and "applied to enclosed items" which is everything on my machine.
right after that I watched my drive icon simply vanish from the desktop!
So of course I restarted and I got the blue screen of death.
I was able to recover in safe mode trying different things but the procedure that made the system work again involved some scmod#.
The machine booted normally after that and everything seemed to work fine. I immediately performed a permission repair with disk utilities. (I gave up the idea of networking for now)
I also noticed that now, I had 2 new "old preference files " in my root directory.

Now here's my problem:

The thing that no one has been able to figure out.
I get a 403 denied whenever I try to connect to my "Site" folder using the new IP.
E,G : http://192.168.1.100/~myusername . I know apache is working cause I see it when I use either just http://192.168.1.100 or /localhost but wont let me in with my own user name.

I looked into apache conf and I don't see anything weird ( thou, not too sure what to look for)
I repaired permissions for the terminal, I zapped the RAM. Not sure where else to look.
Also, I can see my wife's Mac in the network but looking for mine in her's, nothing but beach ball.

So there you have it, aren't you sorry you asked?


(My wife said I've been very grumpy for a week)
 
What are the permissions set to for your ~/Sites folder? (ls -la)

You might want to make the subject name a little more descriptive as well as this might bring some helpful others in to read your issue.

Repairing permissions NEVER descends into your home directory, so any incorrect permissions voodoo that exists there would NEVER be fixed by a permissions repair.

The reason it doesn't work is because "others" (in this case the user "www") have no access to anything in your Sites directory.

Open Terminal, type:

chmod -R o+r ~/Sites

Hit Return.

Now try it. It'll work.

I followed your instructions and still no cigar. Still the 403 error, could this problem be deeper in the system?
 
Can;t you just back-up your files like you said and reinstall 10.3.9 instead of upgrading- Doesn't sound like an issue with 10.3.9 but some glitch probably caused by your changing the permissions- setting up each computer to see each other should be pretty simple- I would reinstall on yours and try again.

Although this IS a good reason to HAVE to upgrade to Tiger!:D

I have 10.4 so I will use it if I need to replace the system. Should I do a "Archive and install" ?
 
NO. Because reinstalling the system WON'T fix the permissions problems in your home directory!

Please supply the results of:

frustrating thing is that everything else seem to work fine xept the damn Sites folder. Well maybe after that I'll find out that I'll have issues with PHP and MySQL too. But one thing at the time.

Sorry, my bad.. "others" needs to be able to execute too (apparently).

As a test, let's make your index.html executable:

chmod o+x ~/Sites/index.html

And try to hit it form the webside. Possibly still a 403 error because ~/Sites isn't executable for "others". Assuming the above fails, try this next:

this is the result odf this last one, notice the "operation not permitted"
and still not working. By the way, should I restart after I do these changes?

(no you shouldn't have to restart, at BEST, restart the apache server with: "sudo apachectl restart", but even that is doubtful to me.)

Ah.. missed that before. Wonder why/how root owns that dir?
Anyway.. I did some testing and here's what we should do to finally straighten all this out:

sudo chown -R eric ~/Sites
chmod go-wr ~/Sites
chmod go+X ~/Sites

Then give us the results of:

by the way this maybe a clue or not but I just tried to login in my computer from my wife's as "guest" and in the "select the volumes to mount"
there is no volumes to select in the window.
